Policies

At MetroWaxx, there are policies and guidelines to ensure you have you "best wax ever" with us and are in effect at all three locations— Ankeny, Des Moines & Johnston. As a female and locally-owned business, we take our customers' utmost comfort, safety, and satisfaction seriously when creating our policies and guidelines

  Appointments

We offer online appointments to all of our customers to better serve you. We also take appointments by phone and text. Let us know what works for you, and we will do our best to work with your schedule.

For best results, body hair should be about the length of a grain of rice (about 2 weeks of growth). If the hair isn’t long enough, we may have to reschedule your appointment.

Notify your waxer if there have been any changes in your medications or skincare routine.

Additional information on spray tans, medications, periods (that darned aunt flow), and more can be found in our Waxing FAQs below!

If the child is 15 or under, the legal parent/guardian must sign the consent form at the first visit. Thereafter, the parent is not required to attend future visits.

FAQs

Can I get a spray tan before getting waxed?

Spray tan appointments should be avoided 48 hours before your wax appointment AND avoided 48 hours after your wax appointment; the preference is to get your spray tan 2-3+ days after your wax appointment. Waxing could remove your spray tan, and it won't do it evenly, you sexy zebra, you. Also, getting a spray tan too soon after your wax appointment could result in unwanted discoloration as your pores are wide open.

How short can my hair be to get waxed?

For best results, body hair should be about the length of a grain of rice (about 2 weeks of growth). Longer is always better. If the hair is too short, the wax won’t adhere to the hair properly and you won’t end up with the best wax ever.

How often should I get waxed?

Rebook your appointment for about 5 weeks out. This tends to be the sweet spot for best results. Rebooking earns double treat points. Earn your way to free services or products faster!

I'm worried about the pain. Is there anything I can do to lessen this before waxing?

Don't do anything your doctor would disapprove of. So, if not in conflict with your health, take an anti-inflammatory before your wax or after, as needed. Another option currently available for purchase is a topical numbing cream, which should be applied to the area to be waxed 15 minutes before your wax appointments. Please contact our salon for more details.

How do medications and my skin care routines negatively impact my wax?

From your last wax to the next one, we need to know if you’ve added any creams, serums, toners, or medications to your at home skin care routine. This is important because ingredients in these products may thin your skin and may make you more prone to skin abrasions or reactions to waxing. Many of the over-the-counter anti-aging products contain these ingredients as well as prescriptions.

Why should I go to someone specializing in Brazilian / Bikini waxing?

MetroWaxx does over 13,000 Brazilian / Bikini waxes a year. With this amount of experience, we can provide the best wax in town. It is one of our most popular services!

Should I trim my pubic region before coming in? How long should it be?

No, the more hair, the better. There needs to be at least 1/4 inch of hair growth (think of a grain of rice) for the wax to adhere properly. We recommend at least two weeks of hair growth before your first wax. If it's not your first rodeo and you've waxed this area recently, typically, we recommend you wait five weeks from your last wax to be waxed again. This rule of thumb applies to most areas of body waxing.

Is there anything I need to be cautious of after my bikini wax or Brazilian wax?

Yes, you should not exercise the day of your wax; this allows the follicles to calm down and minimize irritation. We strongly recommend exfoliating from one wax appt. to the next. Your waxer will provide info on the best recommendation for post-waxing care and exfoliation based on your skin needs. Exfoliation is an important part of post-waxing skin care and should be done every time you bathe to minimize ingrown hairs. You should also avoid heavily fragranced soaps and heavily fragranced deodorant.

Why does it matter if the person waxing me is experienced or a licensed professional?

Estheticians & Cosmetologists are professionals trained for a minimum of 600 hours to become licensed. Most importantly, they are licensed to perform waxing. An esthetician has better knowledge of the skin, and a cosmetologist has better knowledge of hair. Keep in mind that waxing is not just removing hair but knowing how the follicles will react to the service. At MetroWaxx we have a high standard of waxing which is only achieved through a rigorous training program. No matter the waxer’s prior experience they are set to go through up to 8 weeks of training to achieve this high standard.

Waxing is embarrassing for me. Is your spa large and crowded? What if I see someone I know?

MetroWaxx is a small, family-owned salon in a private setting. Rarely do we have more than three customers in the shop at once - so chances of seeing someone you know are very slim. All services are confidential and in a closed room. We respect your privacy and want you to be comfortable with your waxing service. Our Waxers specialize in only waxing services, especially in Bikini and Brazilian waxes. Rest assured, you are in good hands.

How bad does bikini waxing or Brazilian waxing hurt?

It's not like what you see online or in the movies. It hurts a little, especially the first time. Everyone is different; the hair becomes finer and thinner as you have more sessions. As a result, it will become less painful. Remember, our Waxers specialize in waxing services - this means much less pain than with someone who is not devoted to only waxing. Still uncertain? We carry products that can help dull pain, contact us, and we will explain the rest!

What type of wax do you use?

We use both hard and soft waxes. Hard wax is utilized in places like the nose, ears, or other locations with extremely coarse hair. Soft wax is skillfully used for large areas or fine hairs. The size of the area or the hair texture will dictate the type of wax we use.

I'm having my period! Can I still get waxed?

Yes! Menstruation is a common situation. As long as you wear a clean tampon, we can work around the string. Get waxed and carry on like a typical day.

I am in transition from male to female, or female to male. How should I book my appointment?

Our goal at MetroWaxx is to provide the best wax ever. We value each client, and we wax everyone. We want you to feel comfortable throughout the entire process. Some of our team members wax only female body parts, and some have been trained to wax all genders. We want to partner you with the correct waxer. For this reason and to provide the best wax ever, we ask that you let us know about your journey when you are scheduling. We are looking forward to meeting you!

I identify as non-binary. How do I book?

Why waxing as opposed to other methods of hair removal?

Waxing offers instant results that last longer than shaving without the chance of razor burn and the itch of hair growing back in. It is inexpensive and safe. Compared to laser hair removal, it is faster to perform and cheaper. Both waxing and laser hair removal have some discomfort in the process.

Will waxing make the hair grow stronger and thicker when it grows back?

No, the hair will grow back finer, lighter, and softer than before. If you stop waxing, however, and go back to shaving instead, the hair will grow back the same thickness and at the same rate as it did before waxing.

Will waxing give me a rash?

In rare instances, some people may develop an irritation of the skin in the waxed area. The irritation usually is temporary and is the exception to the rule. This condition typically goes away as the person gets more used to waxing. This reaction typically dissipates with frequent and consistent waxing. If irritation appears after waxing, please notify us immediately to avoid further complications.

How long will waxing on the face last?

Everyone is different. Depending on the area waxed, the average is usually two weeks to monthly.

* Please keep in mind that the coloring of a spray tan my alter the desired results of tinting your brows. Please let your waxer know when you had your last spray tan and when you intend to get your next spray tan.

Is chest waxing or back waxing like in the movies or online?

Absolutely not. Although very entertaining to watch, any waxing procedure (even brazilian) is not as dramatic as in the movies/online. Our feedback has been that the first time is most noticeable (Perhaps nerves play a part in this too!), but with each regular visit it lessens because of the benefits of waxing. Hair grows back finer and thinner and at a seemingly slower rate. Consistent waxing gets all of your hairs on the same growth cycle which leads to a smoother feeling from one wax to the next!

Do males actually get their backs or chest waxed?

You would be surprised how many men are afflicted with the problem of excess hair who get waxed on a regular schedule. We have heard that they feel cooler, cleaner, and looks better overall (we agree!). Waxing is just one of those things that many men get done, but they don't usually talk about it.

Will waxing make me break out or give me a rash?

It is possible, especially in the chest area. However, consistent at-home exfoliation should minimize any acne. It is advised not to sweat (exercise, physical activity) or use heavily fragranced soaps and heavily fragranced deodorant.

In rare instances, some people may develop an irritation of the skin in the waxed area. The irritation usually is temporary. Proper exfoliation will prevent this from happening. This reaction typically dissipates with frequent and consistent waxing. If irritation appears after waxing, please notify us immediately to avoid further complications.

How long will the waxing results last?

Everyone is different. The average is usually 4-8 weeks and is something you and your Waxing provider can determine for future appointments. It is common that after the first 2 or 3 services you may feel some stubble. Why does this happen? Our hair grows in multiple cycles that last almost a month! It takes a few waxings to grab all of the hairs throughout these cycles.

Is there any time that waxing is not advised on the chest, back, or arms?

Do not tan in a tanning bed or the sun for 24 hours before or after waxing. We will not wax over a sunburn. If you have a skin condition, you need to consult your doctor before waxing. Also, spray tans should be avoided 48 hours prior to your appointment as the wax may remove the tan, and for 48 hours after your wax as this may cause unwanted discoloration of your skin.

Will I bleed when getting a back wax, chest wax, or arm wax?

You may spot bleed a little at the hair follicle; this does not last long and is normal. So, you may not want to wear your favorite white shirt to your waxing session.

Is there anything I need to do after the wax?

We strongly recommend exfoliating from one wax appt. to the next. Your waxer will provide info on the best recommendation for post-waxing care and exfoliation based on your skin needs. Exfoliation is an important part of post-waxing skin care and should be done every time you bathe to minimize ingrown hairs. You should also avoid heavily fragranced soaps and heavily fragranced deodorant.

Should I trim or shave my back, chest, or arm hair before I come in?

No, the more hair, the better. There needs to be at least 1/4 inch of hair growth (think of a grain of rice) for the wax to adhere properly. If you’ve recently shaved, it takes at least 2 weeks to reach the minimum length of hair needed for a great wax.

Have you ever made any guys cry?

No, not during the session. Only when they see how beautiful they look - LOL.
